The First Dental Implants
Ancient Egyptians tried transplanting teeth, but it didn’t work very well. Today, even with the advancements we have in medicine and dentistry, we are still unable to transplant teeth or their roots.
The history of modern dental implants goes back to 1957 with a Swedish orthopedic surgeon, Per-Ingvar Branemark. Dr. Branemark was searching for a material that would heal around pins and plates in the human heel, instead of rejecting the substance. While doing research, Dr. Branemark discovered that titanium fused into bone and was not rejected!
This was the first example of osseo-integration, a phrase coined by Dr. Branemark. In 1965, the first dental surgery was performed on a Swedish patient with a titanium dental implant, and it remained intact for more than 40 years!
Today, through advancements in digital dentistry and dental software we can produce zirconia hybrid dental implant abutments in a digital dental lab.
